Adoption
I'm doing well otherwise, mostly looking forward to this next week being completed. Next week, in about 6 hours, I'll be done with the bar exam, and drunk. In the meantime, I've got some cramming to do.
On a lighter note, Valentine's day was lovely. With the mandate to do nothing, there was only a little bit less fanfare than usual (namely, no flowers). However I did collect my booty of candy and treats and then fondue for dinner. Mmmmmmmmmmmm. ( I got flowers before he left for Mexico, so all is well).
Even more exciting, is that St. Carl's birthday is tomorrow and finally I can give him his presents, which I've had sitting in my basement for nearly a month. Furthermore, we have a trip to the coast planned for the weekend of MY birthday. Lovely. I can't wait to take the time to breathe and enjoy. I often find myself forgetting to breathe these days.
Out for now

Google Talk RULEZ!
Also, I'd like to give a shout out to PLM for making me a bar survival kit, with earplugs, bandaids, ibuprofen, tigerbalm patches, gum, eyeglasses repair kit, nalgene, tampons, bouncy balls and much more. What a lovely thought, that will be used with much thanks.
No time to surf the net today, or at least no time to comment on it. I did notice though that boingboing has an amazing selection of good articles today. Check it out.

A Char flashback
Lookie what I've found on the amazing internets.I'll provide links when I've been given permission. Otherwise, ya'll have to figure it out for yourselves.
I'd give some dough to see the link regarding "Fucking Caps."
Sadly, much is unavailable...yet the gist and heart are there.
Check out that sneer!
Update: I've been given permission. Click on the photo for instant access. Warning: content will be offensive to most readers.
Explanation:
There's a little thing called the wayback machine (through the internet archives), that has cached every website of all time. So, a quick search for nightsoil.com came up with some interesting images. This is for you: Great Sandwich, Crapartist, Mr. Hands, your fans and the fans of Char, past and present. 2001 is the only year that has any substance, after that the site was allowed to lapse.

Update: ah, mere puffery. All that pretty neat lookin stuff just ain't that great.
Later update: I'm figuring things out, and it is pretty cool.

Linksys WIP300 VoIP Handset
Gizmodo, The Gadget Blog: "Seems we can look forward to a new Linksys VoIP handset by next week. The WIP300 uses any 802.11b/g Wi-Fi network, includes a POP email facility and has 1.8” color display—but it’s going to cost you. The phone runs for $250 (when was the last time you spent that much on a non-cellular phone? 1982?), which Linksys claims it has actually marked down from $300. Thanks a lot guys."

Health insurance
The only thing I can say to that option is that it is so unattractive (time, money, committment), that I'd be willing to figure out a way to pay for insurance myself. Which would be easier if I could even pay rent. Or buy food.

Amazing spam!
They want me to click on the link to see where my refund is. Smelling a rat, I went fishing....
Their site is amazing. Here's the address: http://www.irs.gov/whereismyrefund/
Looks real, with a different address when you hover. The site itself is wonderful, creating the exact look and feel of the IRS site. Except a few things that are a bit different. Namely, the top is cropped off and the main logo doesn't have a hyperlink to the main site. All the other buttons actually take you to the IRS site. Brilliant. The best part is the information they ask for:
First Name::
Last Name :
Social Security Number:
Credit Card Number :
Expiration Date:
ATM PIN: ( 4 digits code )
You have to do a side-by-side comparison (here's the real site) to see how well done this phishing expedition is, but I cannot figure out how to do screen shots right now. And I won't because I'm back to the books.
Super lenses
Boing Boing: A Directory of Wonderful Things: "Smart lenses for super vision
Ron Blum is an ophthalmologist who is developing eyeglass lenses that apparently can give the wearer super vision. The system is based on 'intelligent' lenses made up of electronically-controlled 'pixels' that can be discretely adjusted. Blum claims that his PixelOptics lenses will not only correct the wearer's vision but could also boost it to better than 20/20, possibly even better than 20/10. Blum's company just scored a $3.5 million Department of Defense grant to build a prototype that he hopes will be ready in a year."

WiFi Calls on Cellphones: Coming Soon
Gizmodo, The Gadget Blog: "Philips has announced that sometime next year, a US cellphone carrier will be using its Nexperia 6120 chipset to allow you to make calls on home WiFi networks—for a flat rate of a few dollars a month. Already in the Samsung SGH-T709 phone, the UMA solution uses Philips’ BGW211 802.11g WLAN chipset and allows you to go from a WiFi access point through the Internet and onto a cellular network. Carriers can then track those calls with their billing system and move them along to their destination."

Netscape
One thing about Firefox that I like is the idea of open source, simply because it is more anti-corporation, and that is satisifying. If Netscape allows me to get my windows updates without opening Explorer (another annoying Firefox limitation, or Windows limitation), I'm in, at least for now. I'll have to determine if that is possible.
However, once we get Linux set up on the home computers, then Microsoft/Netscape/Explorer, the establishment can kiss my ass (at least at home).

Oh, and some Mexico pictures should be up soon...boobop is home from Mexico (via Bush airport in Houston) in a few hours. YEAY, someone to talk to.

Someone's must read list for literature
This list should be titled "Most boring reads in Literature." Must read them? I've read them all, and I think this list would be something that I would put together if I wanted to convince someone to never read another book. "Here, after this list you can read whatever you want." If that were my mandate, I would not do it. Television would be sufficient. Heck, there is always David Attenborough for mental stimulation.
Dubliners? Middlemarch? Really? Did this person actually read The Lord of the Rings? Booooooooring. Watch the movies. The only one I can recommend is The Voyage Out, but that's likely because I'm an ardent Woolf fan. Don Quijote is pretty good too, but please, the abridged version.
Rereading the list, they are some good classics. I just wouldn't put them on a list for others to look at as MUST reads. I think this would turn off more people than turn them on to reading. Unless they are unemployed, independently wealthy and enjoy torture. This type of list is only good for those that have read them all, so that they can gloat about it.
That said, what is your must read list? Nevermind, because I'm not going to read DUNE. Again, booooooring. Try some Kafka or Sommerset Maugham. That's scintillating . . . to me. Ah, to each his own I guess. I think we can all realize however that our favorites cannot necessarily be a must read for very many others. If a book really touches you, I mean reallllly touches you, then it is not likely a book for everyone, unless you are everyman. That said, what books do you think others really should read? And why? Not like anyone will answer, so I'll come up with and post a list when I'm back on planet earth. In the meantime....
Readers, I'm taking a break from the internet. I will have to check in every couple of days to keep a handle on email and those pesky bills, but otherwise, I'm taking the wireless card out of my laptop, and not turning on the main computer except to do the above-mentioned chores.
Wish me well with my bar exam immersion. Soon I will return to do battle with the most important endeavor of my life....the real-life, adult, career-defining, job search.

Why is Firefox so unsafe?
I started using Firefox for this reason. I soon forgot about that reason because I fell in love with its usability.
However, I'm quickly falling out of love with it because I have not had nearly the amount of security breaches with IE that I have had since I started using Firefox.
Today, I received a phone call to my cell phone from a time share company, that I saw the name of on a site earlier in the day.
That never happened to me before, and kinda freaked me out.
Last week I had to uninstall all adobe programs and all printers in order to recover my computer from a Firefox extension that was supposed to make opening adobe files easier.
So far, Firefox has been a pain in the ass. I still like that bookmark toolbar though, and the tabbed pages. I'm currently running ad-aware and spy-bot to see what I come up with. Then I guess I'll be running a Norton full scan too. I don't like the waste of time. Anyone with any ideas? Am I doing something wrong with Firefox?
I feel like I've taken the condom off of my computer.
AM Update: viruses and adware and spyware all over the place. I'm pretty close to switching back to the IE team.
Musings made last night
"A movie, Last Rhumba in Havana, was critically acclaimed and received the coveted Golden Bratwurst award at the Sheboygan International Film Festival."
My boobop left for Mexico. One week with the family time-share. I'll get to go next time. For now, I get to stay home and have the house to myself. Well, me and Fife and Chloe and Jack. I'm planning on spending the whole time, gazing lovingly at the computer. I wonder what the animals think of us, watching TV or working on the computer. Especially me. I spend hours staring. And I think about how they basically do the same. I wonder what they are working at, what exam they are preparing for.
Plm (that's peglegmeg for those of you who aren't in the in) came over last night and made me chicken pot pie. Baxter came over too, to visit with Fife. PLM was gracious enough to listen to a lot of ramblings on many a subject. I forgot how nice it is to talk to people that don't live at my house. I have to get out more. We reminisced on the good old days (law school), which we realize we are VERY glad are behind us. What a hellish experience. Not recommended. And if I had known all I do now, I'd have been a superstar. I guess it helps to be humble and accept help from the beginning. Damn pride.
Oh, and new pics of Sam are up. He's exercising. I can't wait to meet the little guy.

I will die if someone doesn't provide me with complete and undivided attention
What? You have something else to do? Well, I'll just bark then until I exhaust myself, or you pay attention to me, whichever comes first.
I know you took me for an unprecedented walk this morning, but I want more, and now. And a walk later too.
If dad isn't coming home for a week, I must be played with by you. So get to it.
-Fife
P.S. If find Chloe in my bed one more time, I'm gonna bark at her until she leaves. In fact, I'm just gonna bark at both of the cats until they leave forever, because they are stealing my spotlight. Assholes.

Tis the season for taxes
And if you are going to use an online service to file your taxes, and your adjusted gross income is less than $50,000, make sure you go through the IRS's website to file for free.
You want to start at the IRS. They will take you to the professional site's free service. Even if you end up being over the amount, they will still complete your taxes (for a fee, see below). If you start at the business end, and try to go back and get the service for free, you might be out of luck. Not all of the companies will allow you to reenter through the IRS site, and then you end up reentering everything on another site. (thanks HRBlock)
The free offer is for Federal preparation and e-filing only. You're gonna pay $20-25 for state filing no matter what. Be careful, some of the sites make you pay for the state preparation whether you want them to do your state taxes or not. They will also charge you money to take their fee out of your refund, usually $25. If your AGI is over $50,000, you'll pay $25 for a basic filing (no professional assistance). Don't let them charge you for direct depositing your money into your account. This is a free service from the Feds and Oregon. You can get it done for about $44 if you play your cards right, and know what you are doing. On that note:
If you can't find information under theIRS's individals site, go to the tax professionals site. The information is well organized for those of you that are a bit tax savvy. Better yet, go to the Code, for the WORD. But be careful with that one, unless you have a handle on statutory interpretation. Google search is also a good avenue for your questions, and you will likely find articles explaining your issue in a more understandable language.
Better yet, just do those taxes on paper (or fillable PDF form) unless they are really complicated. And no, don't call me to help you, at least not until after Feb. 23rd. I have done our house's taxes though, yeay.
Oregon forms.
Lastly, don't forget the Multnomah County ITAX. You can file and pay online. Last year, this. Or better yet, don't pay. Perhaps then I can work for the County again and take you to court. I could use the job. Oh and for you 'Couvs, I'll find a way, someday, don't worry.

If Cascadia ever happens, I wonder what chance any of us have. Though I think we might be ok in PDX.
Update on the earthquake
The magnitude 2.8 event occurred 2 km (1 miles) SW of Portland, OR ."
My first! How very exciting!
Thanks to Technorati and the ability they have given me to search blogs for news. This is the first time that I've realized the full potential of blogs to get helpful information.
Breaking news!
And darn it if I can find any news on the internet.
At first I thought perhaps the neighbors were bombing us. S got into a yelling match with them today. Yikes! I think the line of communication might get better from here. In the aftermath, I fully realized that I'm a gentrificator. More on that theory later.
calling all former bird watchers
On a completely unrelated note, I am again watching my neighbors powerwash and shopvac their swimming pool, with the extension cord dangling dangerously close to falling into the water. I'm on the edge of my seat and just cannot focus on my Evidence MBE questions. Will it happen today? The best part is that the whole damn family is in the pool. Driving me crazy.
Hey Thug/Crap/GS/plm/StCarl, when we having that concert in my backyard? I'll supply the beer.
Btw, gotta watch The Life of Birds by David Attenborough (Blue Planet series).
And another David that also had me dropping my jaw in amazement, this time in incredulity, David Hasslehoff singing "Hooked on a feeling". You must watch this video, it is possibly the worst ever, by anyone, which is sad, because he's not that bad a singer.

end of the day rant
The rant? $125! That's like paying to pass. I've already paid $700 to apply for this bar exam. OUCH! What a racket. I understand there is a lot to organize, but the software is something that if allowed, I could likely download for free.
I better find a job when all this is done, or I've really made some serious mistakes in my life choices. Ah well, at least I've had a three year break from painting.
How I spent my morning
Please note the new handy features: technorati "search this blog" box; archive pull down menu with an easy to find link to this month (January) in the header; a lovely "syndicate this site" heading in the sidebar (so you don't have to check back unless there is something new); and my profile may be reached by clicking on the picture.
I've deleted the random photo blog, cuz it was pretty silly, even I rarely used it. Three I think is enough here.
New picture is up, and no more buttons. I'm going simplistic and subtle this time. Enjoy.
I had a dream last night, and this is what I dreamt. There are a few bugs to work out, but I'm done working on it today (gotta get back to work).
Constructive criticism welcome.

Speaking of spa treatment

Here's a past post, with newly born pic. (which makes me rant at blogger. I tried the top search button and it came up with nothing. So I went to Technorati, downloaded the search bar on the lower left of your screen. When I typed in "Sam" I was instantly taken to this former post. Poo on blogger for making me have a useless header.)
Doggie bathrobe
It was a lot easier than I thought, but since we don't have an industrial hair dryer for him, besides he hates the noise, on a whim, I googled "dog bathrobe."
Check this shiz out, they have several kinds. Sooooooooo cool.
Update: in the groove
Skiing on Sunday kinda sucked. We went back to the first place that I had skied, Snow Bunny at Mt. Hood. Sadly, it was earlier in the day, and thus there were millions more people, including two couples with rabid dogs. Rabid dogs have to be put on leashes. Anyone with a dog knows that factors of dominance change greatly when one dog is put on a leash. They become much more defensive while the unleashed dog (Fife) becomes more aggressive. Fife normally will roll over for just about any dog (except dogs that are too close to mom or dad, he's a pretty damn fine dog). So, add skis into the mix and there was a lot of Three Stooges action going on. Besides all the obnoxious people, the snow was pretty sticky, and we didn't have any spray wax, so the entire uphill was tougher than usual (even worse, I tried thicker socks and tighter lacing, which I thought would fix the sloppy feeling I had the week before. It only made me have blisters). The downhill wasn't nearly as fast and exciting as it could have been. It was, however, exercise.
With my switching to Firefox, I've decided to go all open source. OpenOffice is downloading and Linux will soon follow. Even better, Steve has been learning how to run servers, thus my website might soon be up, and since I'm sure the hits won't be that many, we'll be able to run it off our own server. Sweet.
And what did I do before I discovered widgets? And I'm not talking about the legal fiction. These things are what make a computer friendly. Now, well after the bar, I'll start making my own, so that I can have the perfect computer. Between that and all this open source stuff, I'll finally be able to manipulate the computer to my exact liking. The thought gives me chills.
And, studying for the bar. Today I'm shifting into 4th gear. I have 4 weeks before the bar exam. I have a detailed plan which consists entirely of practice exams. 3 hour shifts, 3 shifts per day. Two shifts are writing essays and one is multiple choice for the multi-state. I have to do some research as to whether I'm typing the exam on my laptop or writing the exam, it all depends on the editing features of the program I have to use.
I no longer have the need to sleep. I go to bed with my civil procedure notes and fall asleep at 2:00, only to wake at 4:00, then sleep from 5-6 and lie awake until I realize I should make use of the time, out of bed at 7:00. Should be one hella interesting four weeks. No smoking, drinking, or sleeping. I am, however, eating rather well, and am making sure to only work one three hour shift on Sunday.
Other than that, I know Steve and I are looking forward to this being over and the job search getting started. Those student loan bills are HUGE! Not to mention the consumer debt, which is getting larger by the minute.
I wanted a challenge, so I went to law school. I got what I asked for and then some.
Update to the update: OpenOffice may not be happening just yet. I have made an initial attempt, and realized that I have had 3 years of heavy Word use that has created a highly tuned and finely crafted setup (and that's just law school. I did have 5 years as an undergrad don't you forget) . OpenOffice looks like chaos, and most importantly, will not easily allow my blue background that has saved my vision from degenerating below -4.25.
I'll not be using OO anytime soon, perhaps not until I hang my shingle out there for the world (don't worry, won't be anytime soon).

The treehouse photos
How did he live in the meantime, you ask? He and his friends built a treehouse in the woods near his college. They also did it just because well, its funny. They were found out, but it took the authorities quite a while.
For those of you that were there, please add to the story if you'd like. I recall something about folks being kicked off campus, and other craziness, but the story changes depending on the person who is telling it. Regardless, here, finally, are the pictures, posted on the internet for all to see. I don't even know who the people are, except Stephen and Steve. If you don't like my titles, get your own Flickr account, beyotches.
Enjoy.
P.S. the Barn (?) in NE PDX has a wonderful band that plays on Friday and Saturday night. Just make sure and get that bluing rinse in before you go. I felt like I was back in WI for the night. You certainly missed a good time, Omega.

Well enough in fact to go cross-country skiing on Sunday. What a hell of a lot of fun! I have a much better hang of things this time, having learned about the edges of the skis and how to use them for better traction. I'm also able to look up when going downhill, rather than look at my skis, which keeps me from falling quite as much.
We had a rather strenuous hike up into Mt Hood, and then quite a long and challenging downhill out. Several parts of which I was going so fast that I scared myself. I do need to learn how to do that sliding sideways stop that they do on TV, and become more fluid going back and forth (instead of my current method of tucking and pointing my skis straight downhill, for max. speed). On one especially steep hill, I used the plow technique to go slow, but hit a bump and did an amazing fall just like on TV, legs and skis and me and snow all in one flying debris pile. All is well. In fact, Steve had the only injury of the day, his wrist got a bit banged up.

I will definitely go again as soon as possible. An amazing rush. I felt like Roger Moore.

Fallen, and really, I can't get up, at least not until the photo is taken
Here's what the tourist info says about it:
"Visitors to Cape Scott should be well prepared for adverse weather conditions - all year round. Annual rainfall is between 375 and 500 centimetres, and prolonged sunny periods are a rarity, even in summer. High winds, rain and generally stormy conditions can be expected at any time of the year. There is no best time to visit the park, although mid summer is generally preferred. A storm once blew so hard that it turned the lighthouse here sideways!"
Creepy Lord of the Rings trees
Lost days
However, I'm much better today, and gonna try and find some food to stave off any more migraines. And now I have to get some bloody work done. So much for going out tonight or skiing on Sunday. Looks like I'm stuck here.
And I should mention that you should never go to the Kenton post office. Besides the legions of old people that were there, making the process the slowest possible, they have a teller that loudly proclaimed that she never stays home when she is sick. Rather, she goes to work, and stays home when she is well, so that she can enjoy it. Lovely. Thanks for the flu, bitch.

forgot to upload the skiing photos

These are some photos from my first time skiing properly. Lying in bed yesterday and today has allowed me to remember to upload these. I'm lying in bed because I have the flu. Lovely, the chills, aches, puking and other lovelies. I'm most thankful that it's James Bond 24/007 week. Yeay. If I didn't feel like I'm dying of hunger and dehydration and caffeine withdrawl, I might just be able to enjoy it.
I would like to mention that my baby has taken wonderful care of me. 7up with a straw!
Back to sleep.

Musings
Second: I sold almost all of my remainder text books, to add about $400 to my pocket. WHEW! Money’s makin me ill, but some good news makes me feel better and now there are fewer books to deal with. I'm a wiz at ebay selling these days.
Third: the best podcast is the Ricky Gervais show. Get it through iTunes, it is free and funny as hell.

Jared's January Fresh Reminders Calls
Baby, I love you and am sorry, and I did it before I thought about it. It was just too good to pass up. Please save one so that I can hear it. Oh, and if you win a drawing, you might get an actual call from him. teehee
Besides, I wanna see your ribs again.
I need a favor folks
See, the Oregon Bar administrators are finally allowing the use of a laptop on the bar exam. And since I wrote my exams the first year of law school and then saw my grades go up by a full letter when I decided to start typing them, I do believe I've got a shot this time, no matter the subjects they throw at me.
So, if anyone can help me out, please let me know as soon as possible. The exam isn't until Feb 20ish, (OMFG!) but I'd rather make sure I have one and it works and I know how to make it work. Otherwise I'll just buy one.

And have it merged with the latest Service Pack to save time? New Year's Eve PARTAAAAY
I mistakenly thought it was gonna be a bit dull. I had just taken a nap, was a bit hungry and drowsy. That was all taken care of with a shot of Herradura and a glass of Johnny Walker. Then, the fun started.
I received two gifts: a magic 8 type ball on a keychain, but it is the devil's ball. Funny in too many ways. The other gift was a dollar store rendition of the old table football game. You know, the one where you fold a piece of paper like a flag and the other person holds up their hands like goalposts? It's fantastic. However, I left it there, because I had somehow lost the professional version of the football (it was larger than the collegiate version), and thought the only way I would ever get that back would be to leave the whole thing there, so that it at least made it into the packaging.
A present that S got was a horrible game that pits up to four players against each other to press the button when a light turns green. The last one to press their button (jeopardy style) would receive a mild or extreme shock. I did this WAY too many times.
And we drank and I was very flitty, the way I like to be at parties, the personification of stream of consciousness. I even had written in indellible ink on places of my body that shouldn't have been allowed to have been photographed. Ah well, it was all for fun.
Anyway, props to Crapartist for throwing a whopper of a party. It was indeed a fantastic way to ring in the New Year.

One more thing
And I wanted to mention that I have recently converted to Firefox as my internet browser. I've been curious and tried it before, but was stubborn. It blows netscape and explorer out of the water for being able to be manipulated in the manner that I wish. I am in love.
Howdy
See, I wasn't sure if I should take the bar again. What I really want to do is get a job, any job and work and get a paycheck and have money and be happy. But that is not my fate. I found a way to pay the application fee for the bar exam, and $700 later, I'm locked in. I have enough money to pay minimum bills until April. After that, I must have a job. Thus, I must pass the bar this time or I'll have to move to a country where I cannot be found. And that sounds uncomfortable, besides, where will I blend in? Ireland, Germany, Australia? Likely places where the law will catch up with me. SUCK.
Anyway, I've been talking to you, old blog, a lot, but not writing anything down, because I was happy with my thoughts being my own and not being read by anyone and everyone. Proud of me though, blog? I didn't destroy you this time. I'm learning.
So, I have wanted to say that Star Wars III is the worst movie I've seen in a long time. When everything, even the bodies of humans are CGI, you've gone too far. And how about hiring a writer next time? I feel bad about wasting my time.
On the other hand, King Kong was one of the best action/adventure movies I've seen in forever. I don't know how people can not like it. It was amazing. Long, but so what. Genius it was. Perfect for what it was supposed to be: entertaining and exciting. I've learned throught the review of these two movies, the people that I will never listen to for movie viewing advice.
Oh, and "The Long Way Round," the videotaping of Ewan MacGregor and his friend Charley something (son of a famous director) as they ride their motorcycles around the world is wonderful as well.
I'm off to study for now, I must keep plugging away at this material, and hope that more sinks in this time than the last.
Thanks for listening.
This some funny shit

The war on Christmas, if you haven't heard
'We had no idea that it would tap into a national frustration.
'People are tired of being told not to celebrate Christmas, they are tired of the ACLU. This is just parents saying they want to preserve Christ in Christmas.' "
That's clever and new. And convenient, since I've recently decided to join the infidel side in the "war." But I have some pretty good company in Jon Stewart. See the Secular Central video.

BBC NEWS | Americas | Minutemen take fight to US capital
Wow

I had no idea this picture even existed. My disbelief is rooted in the fact that Fife, indoors, with a bunch of screaming children and in a place that must reek of pepperoni... well it doesn't seem like he would be just sitting there. I'm assuming his former owners used a lot of those doggie sedatives on him.

Gizmodo, The Gadget Blog
A few things
2. Trying something a little new. It's mostly for Steve and I to see our photos more than we normally would, but I guess others can enjoy it too. I took the Flickr random photo generator that you see at the bottom of this page, and made it bigger and more numerous. Then I gave it its own blog. If I ever get my website up and running, this will definitely be included as a page.Have you seen the world's largest burl? I climbed it. We found it by accident, and I'm so glad that we did.
3. Um, I'm not off to a very good start at studying. Yesterday was up late and done studying early due to book club. Today was interrupted by the dentist appointment. Tomorrow is back at it, up early and off to PCC all day. I have to make sure that studying is the priority and this doesn't happen again. This week I have Saturday to catch up because Steve is working all day, then company party that night. Sunday will be spent cross-country skiing and looking for a Christmas tree (because there is so much snow, the only way to get a Douglas Fir is to go backcountry on its ass).
4. Have I mentioned that I dislike Christmas? I would really like to figure out a way to avoid the holiday completely. I understand the using it as an excuse to get the family together, but I would much prefer that the family make a new holiday, say the third weekend in January. That way, Christmas weekend can be spent like Thanksgiving, stress-free and in my pajamas. Instead, the in-laws are likely flying in and all the trauma that I've suffered every Christmas since my birth will be revisited upon me. Great. Thanks Jesus.
What trauma could be worse than others' Christmas trauma you ask? Well, my mother was a Jehovah's Witness. My step-father was Lutheran. He wanted a tree and a full on celebration in the snowy lands of Wisconsin (we lived in the South), she wouldn't have anything to do with it. I was torn each and every Christmas about whose side to choose. Not a nice thing to do to a kid. Though they seemed to enjoy that torture, making even better when they split for the final time, asking me which parent I wanted to go with. I found out 20 years later that my answer made no difference, so I hadn't needed to feel guilty for choosing my step-father (under duress, I might add). Are you wincing yet? Wait, there's more:
Then, as I became an adult, I dated someone that lived in another country. So, every Christmas for 8 years, I would fly overseas to celebrate with people whose language I could not understand. Just about the time that I started liking the holiday again, I decided to break up with this person, you guessed it, at Christmas. Now, I fight with my current significant other about whether the in-laws will visit. Last year they came and then on the 25th, I left for a week in WI. That seemed to work for me, except for the guilt trip I was awarded from that significant other. This year was supposed to be my year to choose the events surrounding Christmas. I tried, but like always, the dog or the in-laws or whatever deigned it necessary to take the choice out of my control. Now, as soon as the SO reads this, I'll get even more grief.
Anyone with a solution? And Crap, this is NOT a hypothetical, so be nice. I think I just need a way to get rid of the holiday. No more Christmas. Buddhism is an option and more viable than Judaism, but I'd prefer a way to entirely avoid the drama. Say, hospitalization.
5. I just did a spell-check of this entry, and the blogger dictionary does not include the word "blog." Brilliant.
Well, off for now. Happy holidays.

Hello folks
Saturday last: I CREAMED all at poker. We were playing no-limit Texas Hold'Em. Usually there are about 5-6 people at the table, but this week, was the hostess' birthday. There were 12 people playing, until I decimated every, single, last one of them. I normally dislike going to play poker, there is something creepy about it, besides the fact that I always lose, early, and a lot of money. This time however, was the magic one. A combination of wonderful luck in the form of great hands (straights, full houses, and three-of-a-kinds were plentiful), and finally understanding how to read people (especially after they became drunk). It was wonderful. Though I should likely have won earlier, the same cause of that mistake was the one that caught the straight that allowed me to win the whole shebang. Thanks Crap.
Sunday: hungover for a great part of the day, but up at noon to buy some cross-country ski boots (afforded by poker winnings and a generous discount by an employee that gave me the "former roommate" discount), and off to Mt. Hood for my first-ever skiing experience. It was wonderful. I really like it, though going downhill is a bit scary, I've learned a few things, and the snow was at least 4 feet deep, all powder. I'm so gonna say "Dude, I telemark" soon.
Monday: yeay, time to start studying for the bar again. I organized and then headed off to PCC's library for orientation. I found the library entrance (harder to find than you'd think), and got situated.
Tuesday: up with the Tater and off to PCC to study all day long. Well, at least until 4:00, when I headed home, to wait for a friend to pick me up and take me to a company Christmas party. Since I still was working for Multnomah County during this year, I went (I missed last year's party). It was fun. Everyone was very nice and entertaining and I was able to be a nerd and talk about ITAX and Measure 37 and prisoners escaping by tying sheets together (really). It was especially nice to know that everyone still remembered and liked me and were still willing to recommend me when I apply for jobs. Even better was the support. It has been long enough that it doesn't sting quite so much when I have to say that I didn't pass the bar and have to study for it again. It was still a bit embarrassing, but everyone was understanding and supportive and several admitted to having taken it twice too.
So, that's what's happened in the past few days. I'm off to relax and get ready for tomorrow.

Back on track
Last night I went to Portland Organic Wrestling for the first time in ages. It was lots of fun. I need to get out my aggression other than on Steve. Last night the referee was a guy that is always a spoil-sport. So, I made it a point to get him as wet as possible with my Pabst. The strategy was to position myself so that he was behind one of the wrestlers, then look as though I was aiming at the wrestler, and overshoot. It was pretty funny until he became a crybaby, and dropped his glasses and wiped his eyes and acted like the beer hurt him. I think he shouldn't be the referee ever again. Or he will be wet again. And I didn't get in trouble at the Bar of the Gods this time. In fact, I actually had a pleasant and stress-less visit there.
The best part of the night though was getting our picture taken on the way home.
Today, then, I finished painting, and went and got more and thicker chains for the downspouts. I replaced a section in the front that needed it, but was missing one end piece that I'll get tomorrow. The chains are up, and look lovely, and since it is raining, I know they actually work too.
I spiffed up the front yard a bit, making a second rock wall, 2 stones high (about 8 inches) to serve as a border for a front garden space. It looks pretty nice. I also placed more flagstones in the front area to make it look a little more finished. I tried to take pictures, but it is now too dark outside.
So, this weekend, we might just go skiing, which I'm pretty excited about. For now, I need to eat a bit and shower, cuz tonight is date night! Yeay!
